For the second year in a row, The Disability Resource Centre has won an award in recognition of the Way Ahead Programme..
Tracy Plunkett, Service Manager at The Disability Resource Centre takes up the story:
“We collected our award today for the Festival of Learning – Innovative Learning Through Partnership Award for Bedfordshire and Luton. This was for the Way Ahead Programme.
The Way Ahead project was funded by the Community Learning Fund to deliver a programme of personal development incorporating workshops such as change management and confidence building with learning practical skills that would be applied in the wider community. Learners developed skills, strategies, and information to be able to produce an action and move into work, volunteering, and higher education.
The project supported carers, those experiencing mental health difficulties, chronic health conditions and physical disabilities. Learners could progress onto three further stages with Experts by Experience, Community Champions and Champions in Practice, allowing support to cascade into the community and encouraging peer support.
A lasting legacy of the project was the co-production of two peer support groups which will run monthly from The Disability Resource Centre. PHEW – Physical Health and Emotional Wellbeing aim at providing a social group to provide support and confidence building to those affected by disability. The second group is CEDA – Carers Eating Disorder Association provides support to carers and parents of those with eating disorders to meet with others to share experiences and strategies.
The learners are also developing wider partnerships including linking in with other support agencies, NHS departments and complimentary services to invite in as visiting speakers to the peer support groups alongside liaising within the community and local GP surgeries.”
